Does anyone know if we can get primary drive chains for our bikes any more? Jess? I'm pretty sure you don't have them though from memory?
If anyone has replaced one, the specs as well would be handy.
The other question was which water pump replacement bushing (the one at the end of the shaft, inserted in the water pump cover) people are using- Jess has replacement phospher bronze ones, but I recall someone talking about carbonated teflon or something? Anyone have experience with alternatives or just go with the standard?
Cheers

Primary replacement kit . This has been a long time coming with quite a bit of investment and now its nearly there, I will run this in one of my bikes and then I am look at offering a exchange sprocket service kit . I will be changing the chain tensioner to a larger adjustable and then fixed type to prevent any whip on the belt and maximize the contact on the drive sprocket . This is something I have being excited about for a long time and may be the answer for allot of the inner clutch housing rattles and may even help with the grinding/ harmonics that come out of the gear box. As a one off this has not been cheap, but if I had a quantity machined it would bring the cost way down. Any one interested please post MSG and then I will get a better idea on cost. BEST Rog

That's quite an interesting setup. I may be interested of course depending on cost. It would be great to eliminate the harmonics from the primary, just imagine how smooth the re5 would be without that! What would be a super rough estimate of ballpark that cost may be if say 5 or 6 people bought one? Just wondering something like $500 might be okay, $2000 not okay

Hang on... isn't everything in there bathed in oil?
Is it possible to run a belt in oil without it slipping?
If it works, colour me interested.

I'd be interested and could probably put my hand up for 2. Will depend on price but looks like a great idea.

Wow... that is a neat setup. If it smoothed things out a little that would be a plus. I might be in on one.
Not to change the subject but you have a great picture of the steel band that goes around the clutch basket. It has indentations to hold it in place on the "fingers" of the basket. When I took my M apart those indentations were worn off and the steel band was just flopping around as nothing was holding it. I took it off and left it off. Most of my strange noises went away. I have no idea what that steel band is for, those fingers are very strong and I would be shocked if they flexed outwards with RPMs. GT750 and GT550 clutches don't have that steel band.

The belt is designed to run in oil hot or cold. I have a few baskets in my spares that are loose and also one that has been welded , These rings are needed to stop the basket fingers swelling out with the pressure from the plates in between them. I will be getting a quote to buy 10 sprockets and belts and the work out the machining cost to remove the teeth and machine fit the new belt sprockets. Attachments:

Hi Rog, I converted my Bonneville from triplex chain to belt drive, could not believe how much quieter and smoother the engine runs.
Regards Stuart.

I agree Stu , there's a lot of simpler 4 stoke engines converted quite easily with great results , This one with its "Sprag " clutch ,other drive sprockets and the oil guide to sort out makes a bit more difficult to sort out, but its getting close now. Just need to fabricate the tensioner roller. Roger .

Nice work. I too would be interested in purchasing at least one.
I do have good used primary chains that are carefully measured to be within factory specs, but Andy is correct, there are no new chains. I looked into sourcing new ones, but the price was way too high to make it doable.
I am very interested in this project and to how well it performs in real world operation. Good on you for working with it.
Best

Wow Rog. Looking good. Two questions- is it the same ratio so does the gearbox input shaft still spin at the same revs relative to the rotor shaft, and with the belt on it appears to be spinning faster- is that just a fresher battery? Love your work- innovation city!
