After a bunch of work and mucho $ in parts I decided to try and see if the RE-5 would actually make it anywhere so I rode it to work. It started fairly easily and I let it warm up a bit, it was putt, putt, putting in my driveway at about 6:30 AM and you could smell the injector oil burning in the morning air.... the neighborhood squirrels didn't like it.
I took off and the clutch is miserable, it drags and I had to kind of "ride around it". If I short shifted when I backed off the throttle I could get it to upshift and the longer I rode the better it shifted, but it never shifted cleanly. The new oil in the transmission seems to help, maybe it will need to be changed a few times more to have an impact. It downshifts just fine.
My new temperature gauge works finally, it's nice to know how hot the engine is.
The new tires are a revelation, how did the P.O. ever trust the old ones?
It runs pretty good, it isn't a real barn burner at the lights, but as you build speed this thing starts to pull. If you are in 3rd or 4th and have it wound up over 4 grand this thing really starts to move. It must like being under a load.... I like it.
I get to work and it draws a lot of attention, the kids have about a million questions. One of the older guys (Who knows what it is) looks at me and says "That's Crazy". The shop know it all tells me how it has reed valves and it sucks air through the crankcase and I tell him he's an idiot and to put his cigarette out and get lost ;D....
I need to make some adjustments and fix a lot more stuff. It's really softly sprung and I'll bet the front forks have little or no oil in them. The brakes work OK, that's a good thing. The horn squawks, sounds like someone stepped on a toad.
All in all a good first shakedown run. It got me there and home... Cool ;D
