Greetings from Milton Keynes, Bucks in the UK. I bought a US-imported RE5A off eBay last week, and am just in the process of sorting it out ready for MoT testing and UK registering, so I thought I had better join up and say, "Hello".. I remember seeing one in 1975 (I think) and the owner was showing off the "balance a coin on the fuel tank and rev it to the red-line" trick, which impressed me at the time, as I was still firmly in the Brit-bike camp. I never thought I would get one but have always been fascinated by unusual machinery, and rotary engined bikes fit that bill. I have been riding for nearly fourty years and am an experienced general mechanic and was looking for something to do a light-restore and ride job on, so I will be picking brains for help in the near future. The first one is obviously, what do I need to do to re-commission the engine. It starts and runs but I haven't run it for more than a few seconds as I don't know the condition of the engine yet, or how to set it up. Is there a link on here that could offer me some advice please? Another question is how many RE5s are there in the UK? I used to think my 1992 Yamaha GTS1000 was rare (under 80 in the UK, we on the owner's club reckon), but I have never seen a RE5 on the road, except for the one in '75, and only a couple in museums. Anyway, that will do for now. Time to go out and bleed the brakes. Biggles Attachments:

Welcome Capt. Biggles,
Always nice to see another GTS'er... (I think at least 4 of us own GTS'es as well)
There are some very helpful folks here. Lots of information on this forum if you look.
If we can be of help, we are a phone call or email away.
Best,

Welcome to to a new kind of riding, where every stop means fielding amazed questions. Use the search feature on this site to find your answers to tech questions, just be sure to set the parameters in the search engine to go back years instead of just days. First bit of advice is to premix 2 stroke oil until your sure the rotor oiler is working properly.

Welcome here Biggles, I'm the worlds crappiest mechanic but this lot get ME through it so I'm sure you'll have no problems.
I've never seen another on the uk roads either, which is what appealed to me in the first place.
As for UK numbers, they are rising as a result of the US eBay imports, but that still doesn't make 'em common, wadda ya all reckon guys, just about every one with a UK RE5 ON THE ROAD is here on this forum, so what number would you put on it, less than 30?

Evening Biggles,
I'm another British owner dont live far away from Steve w, Doncaster area.
bought mine last year as a non runner (major carb problems) but on the road now, I'm sure you'll enjoy yours.
The biggest possible problem with these is lack of oil to the carb which lubes the rotor tips so while your checking it out run on premix 100:1 until you have proved the oil metering pump and the check valve.
If you hav'nt allready downloaded the parts manual and maintenance manual ( in the resources section ) thats a good start.
Safe Riding.
Regards Stuart.

Hi guys.
Thanks for the welcome everybody. The wiring is largely sorted now, and most of the chassis is now good too, except the front brakes. Bit of a problem with blocked pipes (now replaced) and faulty master cylinder (my job for today). I hope to get it MoT'ed next week, then will do a full engine recommission while I wait for the registration number to come through.
I have attached (hopefully) a picture of my Yamaha GTS1000, which is my long-term (thirteen years and counting) project bike. Not standard by any means!

I trailered the RE5 to the MoT station today, and it passed with only a couple of advisories. Whoopee! Iam now waiting for the insurance documents and the forms from DVLA to arrive and then I can get it registered. Still some work to do on it, but I am really looking forward to getting to ride it.
