Hi Guys and Girls!
I just traded for a semi decent 1975 RE-5 so I thought I'd join up here. I've never had an RE-5 before but have always been intrigued by them so I thought I'd get this one. It has some issues (kind of like me) but I won't go into that here. I really haven't had it long enough to check it out completely, and I have been reading up on things here and other places on the web so I don't act like a total moron when I post here.
I've already been bugging Jess and Barb and bought some goodies from them so that's a start. Jess has already given me some good advice and its nice to be able to get parts from someone who is enthusiastic about this bike.
Soooo.... I read somewhere that Suzuki spent $90 million on developing the RE-5 but only made about 6300 of them, is that right? That means my one RE-5 cost them $14286 in 1975 dollars. I feel better already because I didn't give near that ;D
I'll see you guys around!
Tomo

I'm in Kansas City... Well Blue Springs actually (A suburb). I need to figure out my profile stuff so that is on there. Pictures huh.... Let me see.... Holy crap... I think I did it. Anyway, it looks better in those pictures than it actually is, and those are some of the pics the P.O. sent me. I'll try and get some better ones this weekend. It is a little rusty and crusty but not too bad. You can't see the completely worn out tires from 1975, or the chain that is about to come off. And the clutch that likes to drag and bind. But hey.... at least I gots me one and I'll have fun making it mine and fixing it up. I just ordered some tires and tubes for it so that's a start. It runs, but not perfect by any means. What little I've ridden it I can see the appeal of these beauties. There is horsepower and then there is horsepower, and this is Clydesdale horsepower. That might explain why the back tire is completely bald at 12K miles ;D Tomo

Looks like you got a nice bike there. If they got the chain to last 12K miles I am surprised. My first chain lasted 2500 and stretched so bad I was afraid to use it any more. I found a 630H chain at a Harley dealer and with the double thickness side plates has not worn at all in 2500 miles. I do not know if they have them any more that was 36 years ago. I have not checked to see if Rotary Recycled has any yet.
Looks like you are about 550 miles north. Rats.

Bald at 12K !! We wish. Then again, those original tyres were made from melted down LP records. The K81's on our bikes down here last about 4,000 miles at best. My Metzeler lasertech is about bald at 4,500 miles. And I don't do burnouts ! Nice bike by the way. Seems to have a dent in the right side of the tank. Look at these pics and see what can be achieved by Paintless Dent Removal. Also note that while this is the left side, a friend had a similar dent removed from the same spot as yours so access shouldn't be an issue. Here's a plug for guys who are fanatics and do a brilliant job. For those in Australia, contact Francois at Dent Buster. He introduced Paintless dent removal down here. He does John Law's cars (Australia's Jay Leno) and used to do Renee Rivkin's collection before he passed away. 02 9540 5499 Before: Like Magic.......went up through the petcock to fix this:

I've seen that system used, very clever with brilliant results (in the right operators hands, )

I know a good PDR guy but I don't know if I'll do that. The tank was originally blue and has been repainted the color it is today. The guy I bought it from said he was the second owner and he said the original owner told him it was purchased new resprayed like that. And it looks to be a factory paint job.
The problem is that the red is peeling off along the bottom seam and the blue is starting to show. The headlamp housing has lost some paint and the sidecovers show some wear so I'll probably have it all repainted, and have the dent repaired at that time (translation.... when I get the money!).
As far as the chain and tires wearing out, maybe these are already replacements on my bike that need to be replaced. All of that has been ordered and is on its way.
