Hello folks, I've recently acquired a 1975 RE5 that I'm restoring. I've got it all stripped down to the frame for a full restoration. I noticed that one of the shock mounts on the frame (just behind the seat) has only a turn or two of threads, and is missing beyond that. The larger diameter is intact, but there is little to nothing left of the threaded part of the stud.
I'm considering grinding off the weld (on the inside of the frame) and making a new bolt, but I didn't know if anyone else has run into this, and what they did to fix it. I don't think that welding a threaded stud to what is left would be all that strong, but I may be wrong.
Any ideas?

Hi, I had the same problem on an XS1 Yamaha; in short I cut off the remaining thread flush with the mounting stub then made up a very simple drilling and tapping jig in a lathe in order to fit a new threaded section to the stub.
It worked fine and would not be an obvious repair even with the shock removed......it's way easier to explain in photos so if you pass me an e mail address I'll send you a few snaps that will make it clear.

Well, the nut is just there to keep the shock from slipping off. There is no real "pull" on the threads.
I would get a properly sized threaded bolt, vee notch it, and weld it to the stub. Grind it round and be done with it.
The stub that is there carries the weight of the rear of the bike, not the nut/threaded portion.

Thanks everyone for the help. That is what I figured, but the bike has been apart for a month, so I wasn't sure if something else needed all that extra thread length for something. I'll first try to weld a bolt to it and if that doesn't work, I can always drill it out and tap the stub that remains.
If it is photo-worthy when I'm done, I'll post my handiwork.
Thanks, Garrick

I welded it up last night. Not a perfect job, but it should work just fine. Ummmmm ok, how on earth do I attach a picture? I've used plenty of forums before, but I can't figure out how to embed a picture. I see the "insert picture" icon, but all I get is " [/img]"
