I just experience two oil filter problems with K&N HP1003 oil filters. I had one filter on the bike for about 1200 miles without any problems until today. I went for a short ride and when I got home I found that my right boot and entire RH side of the bike was covered in oil. I wiped everything down and went looking for the source of the oil and I found that the K&N filter was leaking from inside the 1" stamped removal nut that is welded to the end of the filter. I had another filter on the shelf so I replaced it. I ran the bike for a few minutes and discovered that the new filter was also seeping from the same location as the previous filter. I am thinking that when the stamped nut was spot welded on, the weld penetrated too far and burned through the outer housing. I purchased both filters at the same time at the same auto parts store. The second filter only seeped slightly and this was only when holding the engine rpm fairly high. The first filter leaked pretty bad and had I not noticed it could have been disasterous. I am going to send K&N an email and see what they say.

Did you install the filters by hand or with the use of a wrench? Just curious as to whether or not this problem was caused by over tightening (with the use of a wrench).

I had the same issue on my bike. The previous owner had installed k&n filter and I had noted it leaking from the same spot.

The cross reference from the K&N puts it as a very popular filter. Currently I have a Fram filter on it until I find a Hastings or Wix.
I find no need for the removal nut, even on the Harley. If it is tight enough not to leak, it is tight enough.
Filter brand is like brand of oil...... Lots of opinions.

I did not use the nut for installation on either filter so I know that it was not over-tightened. These were just simply defective. Seems as though K&N has a quality control problem.

Same thing happened to a person on the Honda VFRD forum.

My K&N filter has not leaked but the paint has flaked off on the 1" nut as if the metal is flexing due to the pressure of the oil, may try a Toyota filter next, I believe the one off the Yaris is the same as the K&N HP1003.

Here is the response I received from K&N regarding the problems:
Hello Dan,
Thank you for your interest in K&N products. I’m sorry to hear of the concern you were faced with while using our products. I have heard of this concern before, but it is very rare for the weld to cause a leak. I would be happy to send you replacement filters. I will need your shipping address and phone number. Please include this email when replying.
Thanks for writing,

Things can (and do) go wrong from time to time. It's the attitude and responsiveness of the manufacturer that sorts the men from the boys.
No question as to where K&N stands. Top result.

All automotive spin-on filters are full flow I believe - the RE5 stock filter has a bypass valve built in and I believe most automotive filters do as well. It would be good to check this out to make sure the filters we are using have a bypass valve.
