Hi guys, just joined to get a few tips as I`m going to (attempt to) get the 74 mod going next weekend. Just cleaned it up after a few years of inactivity. Awaiting a solenoid which I shorted with the charger carelessly a while back. I had it running 4 years ago so high hopes it will fire. Is it normal for non matching numbers; ie- eng..13511 chass..13794 ? As I remember it would only fire after using jumper leads and was pretty smokey, as it had not been used up to that time for who knows how long. I only ran until it got quite hot but did not risk waiting for the cooling fan to kick in in case it didn`t. I will put fresh petrol in it and clean the plug, fluids are all up. Anything else I should do prior to starting ?

I agree with Ziggy, I always start on premix. Doesn't hurt and makes me feel all warm and fuzzy knowing that some oil is definitely there. I use 100:1 fuel/oil, some others have used 50:1 without a problem.
The chassis number difference is normal, they are generally a bit more than 200 numbers out in the 13000's.
Also, what is a '74 ? That number is a fairly late bike pretty close to when the numbers were almost universally black A models. If your bike was manufactured in 1974, ignore that completely. The relevant bit is whether it is an M (tin can instrument housing) or A (regular GT style instruments).
Best of luck with the start, they can sometimes be cranky after a long layup. But I've had two recently that started straight up, one after probably 20+ years (if not more) and another after 4 years. You never know.

they can be very stubborn to run after a lay up my orange re5 was a dog to start after 4 mth lay up once it started it was fine did 100 miles on sunday without a miss today 3k rpm miss was back but was fine over 3k revs,quircky re5 thats why we love them

I have just checked your numbers on Tonny's web site, Your bike 13511 is listed as Feb 1975 in Pennsylvania , I think that's quite a late number for a Feb 1975 regester ? Good look on starting , Rog

Ok then, thanks for all that esp to wayne. I will try the 100/1 premix which will not foul it if oil is being pumped properly too. It`s a tin can. A little disappointed that it`s a 75 as now doesn`t match year with the mach 111. Says 74 on the compliance but I believe you guys. Some interesting stuff on site too, good one. Will post as soon as I install part and try the start up. Is 95 unleaded best or 98?

I see your one of us.........down under, and therefore have the unleaded problem.
These engines will run very low octane (fuel in the 80's range) but given the situation here in Australia (ie the looming demise of 91 in favour of 91 + ethanol) I have switched to 95. I have tried 98 in two bikes and can't pick the difference but the 95 does give better mileage than the old 91.
Also, just for interest, the "next years" model bikes tend to be released, by Suzuki at least, quite a few months before he end of the last year. For example my GS750B is complianced 10/76 but it is indeed a B model which is 1977.
My understanding though is that despite promised October 1974 deliveries, the RE was delayed and customers didn't receive bikes until January 1975.
