My wife has a long history of being patient with me... She never questions what crazy stuff I drag home...
Yesterday, I come driving home in my pickup and my wife, never flinches and says "Where did you get the bomb?"
I said, "Honey, it's not a bomb... It's an external fuel tank for a C-130...I think it would be an excellent sidecar body with some modification"
She says... "Oh, well that's nice dear... have fun!"
Man... did I get a good one ;D

How many gallons does an external tank of a C-130 hold?
I used to work at "Allison", now "Rolls Royce", maker of the engines on the C-130.

Tag sats 320 gallons Really really nice craftsmanship... Just finshed cutting it up... Welds are outstanding... fit is superior... Should make a really really cool body for my re5 sidecar project... Best, Jess

The real question here is, why haven't you put up pics of the fuel tank?
You should get a second one for the other side to extend the range between fill ups, 320 gallons should get an re5 just a bit past 100 miles.

Spent the entire weekend sectioning the tank... Cut about 6 feet out of the center section and reattached the nose to the tail... I am pleased with the results... The panels line up very nicely.
I have been taking photographs all during the process, so I should have some real nice start to finish photos.
When I get it done... I will try to get some help in posting a photo essay.
My buddy in TX let me know last week that my mounts have been cut on a plasma table and I am looking forward to seeing if my "shadetree"engineering is up to the job.
I have great respect for pro welders... Welding aluminum is tough. I am pretty good with most steel and can make exceptional welds with 4130... But man, aluminum is tough... Fortunately, the sidecar frame and mounts are all 4130.
Just thought an update was in order...
Best,
Jess

So I am happily welding away this weekend... and all of a sudden I start burning holes in crap... I stop welding, check the torch, check all the machine settings, and can't find a thing wrong... Try to start another arc... and it's doing the same damn thing.... After scratching my head for a while... DOH! Argon bottle is empty... One o'clock saturday afternoon... Welding supply closes at noon... FRACK!!! (thanks to battlestar gallactica for giving us cuss words we can use in public) Got my bottle filled today... can go back to melting tonight. Best, Jess
