Suzuki turned many RE5M models into the A models by changing the instruments, signals etc. They did this by cutting off the original wiring harness up near the steering neck and splicing on a new harness that matched the new instruments, lights etc. The difference between the GT750 and the RE5 A model instruments is primarily the Tachometer as the lights for the oil pressure and fuel light are different from the GT750. The Temperature gauge is different also as the small dots that indicate the thermostat opening points are different. There are quite a few mechanical differences with the mounting for the headlight etc.

Yes, I have a friend who has put A model instruments on his M. There were no problems whatsoever but you will lose an essential item for your B points (which is part of the M model tacho). If you don't run B points or don't care, they're fine.
But please note as others have pointed out, A model instruments are NOT the same as GT750 and my friend used genuine RE5A instruments.
EDIT: I forgot to mention (but Dan above mentions the mounts) that he also purchased and fitted A model ears and headlight shell but I guess that's sort of obvious.
