This is just for information, I bought a new battery as the old was getting a bit tired after 10 years.
I was a bit disappointed to see that the new battery didn't make much difference to cranking speed.
While doing some general maintenance, I replaced the original starter solenoid with a new one from RR.
Wow, what a difference. Cranks and starts like it has a brand new $250 battery in it (which it does). Don't know much about electrics and didn't know that even if a starter solenoid works, it may not be anywhere near peak condition.

Solenoids can draw a bunch of current as they age...
If your starter spins slowly, and your battery is topped up... chances are the soleniod is sucking a bunch of juice.
Just my 2 cents...

Might just clarify there after reading some US battery prices- $250 ain't really anything special by the way. Welcome to Australia. The cheapest battery was lead acid for $190, typical sealed batteries to suit the RE5 around $235 to $255.

lead acid battery for the re5 is about £55 in the uk, regarding the solonoid the interal contacts can go high resistance with age so the current cant pass as it used to you will still get a good voltage on the output side but the ampage will be reduced hence the slow cranking hope that helps regards mike ps ex mechanic now retrained as an electrician

Wayne, I'm using a Motobatt MBTX 14AU in my RE - it's the same size as the one that would fit a GT or Katana. It's quite small in the RE battery box (I've just zippy-tied it into one corner) but is more than adequate to start the RE. I've had some flooding issues lately and have been winding my poor old RE over quite a bit and I haven't been able to flatten it yet. I'm sure that that particular Motobatt isn't over two hundred smackers.

Thanks Mike, I guess you can't expect much better from any component after 37 years.
Thanks for the tip Paul, but too late, battery was bought a couple of months ago.
If you get the MotoBatt that fits the RE5 I got quoted $255. I bought a Decker, once again, the appropriate size and it was actually $235 after some shopping around. We get well and truly screwed over down here.
But the 10 year old lead acid it replaced, still alive and powering my A model. I'm going for a record here.
