It doesn't look like a NOS item to me, it looks like its had a petcock fitted at some point that has been removed and tasken the paint with it

It was probably either a warranty replacement due to some defect, that sat on a dealers back shelf for years - the stripes look a bit crooked, or it was an insurance replacement because of the gash in the paint on the LH side. I remember when I worked at a dealership back int he 70's - we had all kinds of warranty parts sitting around with small defects and also insurance parts that had been replaced because of very small scratches or dings. It would be difficult to believe that any dealership would have a new tank in their inventory of spare parts.

It could also be a tank that was removed to convert an M to an A. That might explain the petcock mark.
I bought an NOS tank several years ago. When I asked the bloke why he had it he told me that he was a dealer in the 70's and that it was left over from an M after the factory A model kits arrived. At the time, I'd never heard of this.
I've also subsequently met the guy who was tasked by Suzuki in Australia to gather up all the removed M model stuff, destroy the bits and take them to the dump. Something similar may have happened in the US as well. I believe that the destruction of the old bits may have been for tax reasons. Anyway, some tanks etc snuck through.
As for this tank, I personally wouldn't pay much for it over an average tank. Once the paint is damaged and you have to respray, not much point in an NOS tank. There are many used tanks with good metal but which just need a respray.

Always lurkin' ain't ya........... For me, there's more to NOS........I just bought an NOS alternator cover through a middleman. I said I'd take it as long it was NOS and it looked new. His reply was "it's new". A guarded reply, that's not what I asked. But, what the hell, I took the risk and bought it. It's going on the A (I tell ya, it's NOT restored !) Wayne PS Late edit - With regard to the date on the photos, I note that it says 2004/01/01..........makes me think that all he's done is let the batteries on his camera expire and it's defaulted to factory presets on the clock.

it must be a tank that has been removed from a bike as suzuki replacement tanks do not have the warning stickers i.e fuel etc on them due to different countries having different stickers.i have just checked on my new tank and there are no warning stickers fitted regards mike

i agree , a NOS tank would have no warning decals or rubbers, I fitted one to my bike 2 years ago / It was in its original box with all its packing . Rog
