The throttle cable on my RE5 is seized up, I have bought a replacement cable but the old cable on the pull side has 3 sub-cables, the "new" one has 4 cables. I guess I can hook up 3 and just tuck the extra one somewhere. Also the return cable is not the same. Any suggestions? Has anyone freed up a stuck RE5 throttle cable any tips?

You have two throttle cables - one to open the throttle and the other to close it. The opening cable has 4 cables the closing cable has 3. The oil injection pump only requires an opening cable so there is one less cable on the closing cable. The chain oiler was fed off the same oil injection pump as the engine - when the chain oiler was discontinued the oil line output from the injection pump was simply plugged off.

Hi Dan,
Thanks for that info. What are the 4 cables used for? Mine only has 3 and no return cable so it looks like a PO has bodged a return cable to make it run....which it does very poorly :(
Thanks Rick
Edited to say.... just found a link on RR site to parts book. Now I'm confused as page 48 shows 2 throttle cables, one with 3 ends and the other with 2 so not sure which I have (as there's only 1 cable with 3 ends on my bike!)

The pull cable has 3 cables, carb, port valve and oil pump, push cable has 2, carb and port valve.

I may have the cable numbers mixed up - It actually sounds like what you have is an early j or k model GT380-550 or 750 triple throttle cable. This cable would have three ends for carbs plus the oil injection cable making 4 cables ends total.

The re5 has two cables, pull and push.
The pull cable splits to 3, Carb, metering pump, and port valve. This is the only cable that is necessary to run the bike. It is the one that is furthest from the rider when sitting on the bike.
The push cable, closest to the rider when sitting on the bike, splits to 2, one to the carby, and one to the port valve. It is redundant, and should be removed.
If someone sold you a one split 4 cable, it was NOT an re5 cable.
Best Regards,

For what its worth, I found a business online called Motion Pro that advvertises cable rebuilding. You can send them your old cables to duplicate. An NOS RE-5 cable just sold on ebay for $86.00. I believe that Motion Pro can rebuild the cable assembly for about $60-$70. I'll check into them once my restoration gets underway.

I'm sure I've seen a nos set for less than that, will try and remember where it was.

Thank you for all the replies. I think that you are right that the new cable I bought is for a GT750, the return cable looks the same though. I removed the existing return cable from my bike and have managed to get the old cable working. The action is fairly stiff but it does snap closed pretty nicely.

I would love to know where there are any "real supply" of original pull cables...
We have no more NOS cables. We can supply good used.
I am also curious as to the quality/look of a custom set.
If someone has purchased, would they post some photos?
Best,
