This week I've started the strip down of my M for a full restore over the winter (and perhaps the spring and summer at the speed I work). One of the items that I'm going to have problems with is the seat. My seat base is in a pretty bad state. Has anyone had a replica made? I guess it would be possible to manufacture one in strengthened fiberglass (or dare I say it.. carbon fibre) by using an original base to create a mould.
Its a bit beyond my skill level but just wondered if it had been done or if anyone had any other ideas? I've also thought of stripping off seat foam and building up and strengthening the base from the inside.
Or...... Jess, do you have any good seats?

This is a very requested item... I wish I had a good source.
If someone wishes to step up and put the capital into having them made, I will happily provide an outlet for them to sell.
Based upon past experiance, I will not place capital into this product. Far too much cost for them to sit on the shelf until someone decides to purchase one.
Best regards,

What is damaged on the Seat pan? You might try to find a auto body man that would be willing to repair it since it seems to be only .050" metal. That is a little heaver than body metal but he should be able to work with it.
For what it is worth

I've seen stalls at major classic bike shows that can fix seat pans to a high standard, try Googling or look in a classic bike mag for information.
Alternatively attend Stafford Show in a couple of weeks.

Thanks for that contact Roy, I'll go over to see them next week as they are not that far away from where I work.
Also, what is the general opinion on the best coating for the frame, powder coating (I know its unliked by a few) or good old traditional paint?

Don't like powder coating at all, yes it can look good, but it tends to be applied too thick and obscure detail, if the colour fades you can't polish it back, it's hard to repair damage and if you get a fuel drip on it it turns white.....or at least it has on my GT750 under the leaking fuel tap.
But the worst thing is trying to get rid of the stuff, as soon as a simple solution to removing it comes along I'll be there, but I haven't found one yet......it's extensive blasting or burning it off, both labour intensive and potentially damaging. I curse the day the PO of my kettle took the easy option.

Collected my refurbished seat from Leightons today. They've done a fantastic job. The base was broken in two and lots of rot and corrosion. They've rebuilt the base and recovered. Its like new. I'm very pleased with the job and would recommend them to others who need their seats rebuilding, even if the base looks beyond repair they can do a great job.
Thanks Roy for the contact.
