Just reassembling an M gearbox. Always do this sort of stuff with both service manual and parts book open. On the kickstart shaft, there is a "Plate, Oil level", part #8 on page 25 of the parts book- see below. This part appears to be missing. It wasn't there on disassembly as I photographed every bit that came off the shaft washer by spring by gear etc. My day set aside to do this job comes to a grinding halt. I don't really expect anybody to know this but you never know.........was this part discontinued and no longer used, Suzuki did do this sort of thing. Or has a previous mechanic lost this bit (the engine and gearbox have been removed in the past evidenced by the crappy silicon job they've done around the gaskets). Thanks, Wayne

Don't know it this will help, but it may? There is a kick start shaft for sale on ebay and seller has exploded all of the parts in the picture and I don't see that piece in the listing. You may want to ask the seller whether or not they had that piece. I doubt it....
Listing title is: 1975 Suzuki RE5 Rotary Kick Starter Shaft.
Or, is that piece on the other side and attached to the casing? I don't remember the RE-5 having an oil level window? ... Sounds like it would be a reflector to see the oil level through a window... So, chances are when it went to production they took the window out?

Hi Wayne, Part #8 was only used in the very early engines and it was there to fill in a hole in the main engine/transmission casing. If you do not have the hole then you do not need part #8 I Hope this solves your problem. Roy Attachments:

Supersaki, I'm intrigued by you're knowledge on such matters as above, what is your background with the RE5? How do you know such things? Z

Guess it is one like this you are looking for. Read more about kick starters here micapeak.com/archives/re5/msg05031.html-Tonny Picture of a RE5 delivered without the kickstarter, as mentioned in Sam's text on Micapeak.

No it's not mine, the blue one belongs to Les of the Suzuki Owner's Club, the photos were taken a number of years ago by CMM.
As I remember the very early kickstart had a slightly different crank to it. Oh!, just noticed Tonny has posted a photo of it, no I don't have one of these.
Do we still get an explanation of your RE5 knowledge?

There are no secrets,I have bean involved with RE5`s for almost 30 years on and off through my interest in rotary bikes. I am no longer interested in modern bikes, they just don`t do it for me.My thirst for knowledge in unusual bikes keeps me interested in the RE5 and other rarity's like it. Having more than 30 years experience as a motorcycle mechanic helps me along the way most off the time, but i still get stuck from time to time, and that`s what makes it fun.(I think!!) Regards Roy

Wow ! That was impressive. I never expected a definitive answer to that one. Can't thank you enough SuperSaki. I can go back and finish the job which is a bit of a psychological turning point as engine bits can now start re-entering the frame.
And thanks Redbug2, that was a good suggestion sans a definitive answer.
I suspected as much but I have a very early parts book (still shows kickstarter lever as an option), another one dated Oct 74 and a 1976 book and they all show the part. Couldn't reassemble someone else's gearbox with a bit missing.
Many many thanks, what a fabulous resource this board is.
Wayne
