My friend's bike which has now got about 3000 klm on it since we got it back on the road uses sump oil by the gallon. Specifically 500 mls in about 250 klm being the most recent.
The bike is not restored, it's an "as is" but it is a very strong runner. I've currently been riding one that Jess told me is probably one of the top 5 runners he's ever had and this one is very close in power.
So there can't be too much wrong........but something is. Any ideas ?
In my limited experience, excessive sump oil consumption is normal after coming out of long term storage but settles down to a dribble within a couple of thousand Klm.

Hi Wayne
Maybe a stupid question(?) : what do your friend use as oil quality ? Here some used 2 strokes oil everywhere (sump oil and CCI oil) and they had a big oil consumption ... Everything returned to normal with the 20W50 oil...

No, not a stupid question at all.........but we use Castrol GTX 20/50 as recommended by RR and Suzuki.
Given the absence of external leaks, I suspect that it can only be the O ring that sits inside the rotor circumference under a circular seal. I can only find this O ring listed in the Engine rebuild manual. I think that it seals the oil that circulates inside the rotor and prevents it from coming up the side faces of the rotor where it would contact the side seals themselves.
I have been told by a Mazda mechanic that these O rings do harden with age and are the ones responsible for the smoke on start up. And I suspect, excessive oil consumption if they're beyond redemption.
Thanks Alain

I've just come back to RE5 ownership after a 30 year break. I see that almost everyone recommends Castrol GTX 20W-50 in the sump and oil tank these days. I'm in the UK and have been looking around for the above oil and it seems we can only get 10W-40 and 15W-40 which are both semi-synthetic. Are any of these OK or is there something else recommended for the UK.
I also fly a 1940's plane and use AeroShell W 15 W 50 in the engine. This is a Semi-Synthetic Ashless Dispersant Engine Oil. From the technical spec it seems to cover all the bases for use in a wankel. Has anyone ever used an aviation piston engine oil in their RE?
Thanks

I just came across a letter amongst all my collected paperwork which is from an RE5 service centre to a customer asking about oil consumption. So just for general info I include the following.
The letter from the service manage states in part that oil consumption of more than "1 pint", (about 570 cc) in 300 miles is considered "excessive" and that side seals are likely to blame.
Thus anything less than this is, I guess, within the normal range. Seems rather high to me but that's almost from the horse's mouth.
