I know this has come up before and heck, maybe I'm the one that brought it up. A couple years ago when I first got my RE-5 running, the speedometer made a horrible noise. The sound of needing lubrication, not a grinding noise. I needed to send the unit to Sam anyway since it needed a new faceplate on it as it was fogged badly. He lubricated it with I think he said whale oil. Well now it's making that horrible sound again. I just talked to a "speedo" guy locally here and he said he has seen it many times. He said it's not lubrication issues, but the "jewel". I assume the "jewel" is something like a bearing or something. Does this make sense? Can't I just lubricate this thing? Is it difficult? What kind of oil? Thanks!

Mine did it when I bought it 3 years ago. I lubricated it with sewing machine oil, and have not had the problem since.

i made the faceplate for the speedometer (the bit that goes to the wheel axle and turns the gear for the cable.) which seems to be a big weak point.
I just made one from a big washer and cut it up like the original. Works like magic!

You have to take the complete instrument apart, and when it is apart, it is easy to clean and lubricate the speedometer.

I want to pull out the speedo from the whole assembly. It all came apart nice and easy but I have to remove the trip odometer knob. How does that come off? I don't want to break it.

My speedometer seems fine now. I put 50 miles on it Sunday in 50 degree weather. It was a bit nippy...
