Does anyone know how an RE5 muffler is constructed? (I know about the air cooling duct.) Is it filled with sound reducing packing or is it like a Kawasaki triple muffler which is basically an empty shell divided into chambers? I'd like to have my Suzuki mufflers re chromed, but the plater won't touch them if they are filled with anything. I can't tell from looking at my mufflers and wondered if someone has investigated this. Thanks

Never took one apart but will be having the same problem. You might try finding some garage with a scope to see in cylinders may be of help.

Your plater wont be able to rechrome. They are two different chambers with the inner chamber being filled with a fiber glass type material

Thanks very much for the answer. It's not the one I hoped to get, but now I know. It sounds as though you've disected a muffler. Can you tell me if the inner chamber has dividers with packing between them?

When I took mine off, a bunch of nasty stuff poured out. Looked like some kind of rusted metal packing.

I have not gotten as far as to re chrome mufflers yet, but my plan is to make plugs to seal off the inside. Before it goes to the chrome process, I will fill it with water so: 1) It will not float in the chrome tank. 2) It will keep the muffler "pressure neutral" and not let fluid leak in or out. This keeps the chrome guys happy, and does not disturb the insides of the muffler. Jeff

Beemer, I've only just joined and saw your question re muffler. I did meet a bloke who told me face to face that he had completely split a RE5 muffler and found no fibreglass or wadding material other than what is wrapped around the removable "spark arrestor". I also had my mufflers rechromed and the shop didn't plug it and had no problems. After what he told me and my knowledge of the construction, there is no wadding or fibreglass as the gap between inner and outer pipe remains clear for airflow.

I had mine re chromed in the UK, and the plater made a beautiful job of them. The only assistance I gave him was to remove the two stainless rear baffle plates, I felt a bit sorry for him having to hold these heavy mufflers up to the polisher, but it can be done and very successfully too.
Given the temperature they run at there should be little or no oil residue in the silencers.

Bit of a distance from North to South Wales Les Mick (kettle 738) has had good results but I've never had any exhausts re chromed. Had some small items done locally but a couple of items have started to peel so I switched to www.chromefix.co.uk/ for my Stinger front mudguard to be re chromed, good result so I've sent my KH400 front mudguard there as well, quick turnaround.
