Thanks Jess, What about a make and type, that is like a Metzeler Perfect Me 11 or Dunlop Sports Master ?? Just wondering what people usually use to try and match what was originally fitted?? At the moment I have Cheng Shin's on them both Simon

Tire choices are kind of like the dreaded "oil threads"... I have had excellent luck with all major brands... That said, I prefer Metzlers. The biggest problem/difference is that tire design has changed so much in 35 years. The shape of the tire (round or flat) will make a difference in the "feel" of the bike. Just my opinion, but any modern tire (tyre) is so much more advanced than the tires that were available when the Re was new, that none is a bad choice, even Chen Shen... Most importantly, 30 year old rubber is not safe... no matter how good it looks. Also, the most neglected safety issue for most motorcycles is proper pressure. It takes less than a minute to check. There is no excuse for not doing it regularly. Best, Jess

Good tires as well Lee...
Like I said... much is personal preference.
Bridgestones were put on for the US version at the factory, but I have seen continentals on one or two bikes that I would say may have come from the factory... maybe diffeerent markets had different tires.
Best,
Jess

I wouldn't be surprised if I have the original tires on my RE5. I'll have to take a look to see what they are.
I use Continentals on my triples and I like the ride and tread design on them a lot. Some tires that I see on older bikes just don't look right to me on a vintage bike.

Just to add my comment to the Tyre/tire debate. When I restored my GT750 i refitted the original tyres (Avon Roadrunners back/front if memory serves correct). They had loads of tread on them and I thought they added to the original character of the bike.
To cut a long story short, I was riding home from my normal Sunday run to Matlock Bath, the front wheel hit a metal grate cover and immediately lost grip and slid sideways!! - I did not drop the bike but it was a close thing.
Speaking to one of the guys in the tyre Dept of my local bike shop he said that tyres become hard with age and consequently don't grip the road as well.
On his recommendation I had new ones fitted (Metzeler ME33 front - ME77 rear).
What a revelation! The bike handled almost like a modern machine, totally stable and absolutely no movement when riding over grates or tar bandings on road repairs.
I have fitted the same tyre combination to the wheels of my RE5 M which I am currently restoring.
Regards, Mick J
