after killing many brain cells trying to figger this wankel thing out , i am stumped. sent the carb off to rotary recycle last year to be rebuilt, great job. found the ignition points, whew that was a tuffy, paided way to much for spark plugs 35$ each so far 4 of them.they foul easy, rubbing alcahol will save one a few times but not many. have been trying to set the timing but when i set it to 5-8 degress btc it runs like crap, set it to where it runs ok the timing marks are off the scale cant get it to idle clean, fuel mix screw 1 turn out. idle screw, next to the cable has no affect on the idle, whats with the throttle stop on the trottle tube.? any how i am thinking about taking it to jess stockwell,he is only about 2 hours away.

Have you used a feeler gauge to check the gap between the primary points? That should be checked and set prior to doing any timing adjustments. The gap should be 0.018. That needs to be checked with the point cam at its peak. Hope that makes sense, and someone please correct me if im wrong. I think that's the order of operations

set the points re set the points what i dont understand is the problem with the timing if i rotate the dist all the way it runs half ass, try to pull it back and it runs crappy, the idle going high low smooth lumpy revs but has a lot of throttle play, as far as running on the throttle its the bomb its moves on u can feel the port opening and the bike really kicks, but lousy idle and still cant get the settings right, working on it now, man when that motor warms up the whole thing gets hot whatch out

Have you had the clutch cover off and not aligned the timing marks properly on reasembley which would account for it not running at 5-8 btc. on my 76 re5 the bearing carrier behind the left hand counterwieght was missing a bolt, one was loose and the other was loose and bent, this allowed the shaft to drop and it through the timing way off it would only run with the distributer set hard over to one side, it drove me crazy for a while i even took the clutch cover off to recheck the timing marks again as soon as i change the bolts it fired right up on its timing marks

if you had the cluch cover off (right hand side) then there is a scribed line on the counterwieght which aligns with a cast mark at the top of the casting, then on the gear on the inside of the clutch coer bolted to the distributer shaft there is a punch mark which aligns with an arrow head on the casting right next to the gear.
