QUAWK, I used metal screws on my W/S installation. These PICs from my hi miler, a bit different from memory of another fairing. dition to my above post maybe you could respond to the windshield fastener size question. Also why would riding in the rain cause the exhaust studs to pull out?Others may know better, just my feelings and experiences. Tim

My windshield came with the plastic screws. I replaced them with stainless screws of the nearest metric equivalent diameter. I wonder if Gustaffson provided the 1/4" bit but with the intention that you use original size screws? Just giving you a fudge factor as lining up the windscreen and getting ready to drill that first hole was traumatic lol.........
I'm lucky to live in a year 'round riding climate. All of mainland Australia is. I've ridden in 48C (118F) but rarely see below 5 C (41F). Typically, 5 to 35C is the range.
