Having just got my bike to start and run after much work, research, and great help and advice from members of this board, I realize I probably still have a long way to go before I am actually able to take it out for its' first ride, but one step at a time as they say. Although I haven't gotten that far yet to be able to take a look at it, was wondering about the fuel petcock issue with the gas tank. I understand from reading related posts that the original petcock is failure prone and has the unusual vacuum on (engine running)/fuel on feature. Has anyone investigated installing a conventional manual shut-off petcock that is on nearly all other bikes? I guessing there is an obvious reason why this hasn't been done but just haven't looked at the tank since I took it off of the bike long ago.

Would having the tap basically on prime all the time not over fuel the carb on tickover ? I had no end of problems with my original tap, but eventually I beat it and now it works a treat.

I'd say not. Technically once the engine is running the fuel tap is open anyway.
I've certainly done more than one ride forgetting that I've left the tap on prime with no apparent issues.
