I have been attempting to make one bike out of two for the past couple of years. The end is in sight and suddenly this happened. When I hand crank it by turning the alternator bolt, the spark does not occur anywhere near the timing marks. I have double checked the wiring, grounds, etc. Another crazy thing is that spark occurs more often when I hand crank it backwards. This makes no sense. I am wondering if I screwed something up when I assembled the distributer side case cover. I am in the process of draining the oil in case I have to take the cover off. Another instance of one step forwards and two steps back. Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks

You probably know, but I will say it anyway. The engine rotates the opposite direction as the wheels when the motorcycle is rolling forward. Clockwise as viewed from the left side. Or the gears are timed incorrectly.

Have you by any chance install points (2) on the left instead of (1) on the right .

I believe you have to time the inner timing marks before fitting the primary case/water pump distributor case, like the GT380 etc. Worth a read of the factory service manual. Regards Stuart
