I finally got this project moved to the shop. This RE has less than 6,000 original mile and is all original. ( still has original tires ) My plan is to refurbish this one as I believe it has too much originality to be restored. The engine is stuck and I am planning to disassemble and replace all o-rings and seals, fix carb. and fuel tank issues and much cleaning. I think I will also address some of the small parts corrosion and paint as few small parts as possible. The goal is to make a nice rider. I am also hoping to copy the fairing decals for my restore bike, so if anyone is interested in a set let me know.

Nice! I do have a fellow who's been chasing stripes for some time. He's in the US and I've sent him a message re your project. Hopefully he'll get back to me and I'll put him in touch. RE your intention to Preserve this bike. I did a post a while back called "Restoration or Preservation". Through Jess, I was lucky enough to have purchased one of Sam's Museum display bikes with 4000 miles. It still has its original registration sticker on the mudguard. On close inspection, it was so good I decided to clean it up and do a different sort of restoration. Some engine cases had yellowed a bit along with the radiator grill and fan shroud, there was a small dent in the tank and the heat shields were in perfect shape but had light rust. I sourced NOS cases from the EU, SA, AU, US, NOS heat shields and fan shroud. Jess sold me a very rare NOS radiator grill and a beautiful original seat and even supplied genuine NOS engine badges (forever grateful mate). Some paintless dent removal guys took out the fuel tank dent by going in through the fuel tap and level sender holes (don't ask me how this is even possible). It's a restoration of sorts but nothing is "restored", either original or NOS. It retains the factory finish and it's my favourite bike from that point of view. Engine badges yet to be fitted but otherwise, a preservation, not a restoration:

I am looking to reproduce the silver/black fairing strips that were sold separately for the 1975 M model fairing as shown in the Suzuki accessory brochure that is posted else where on these pages.
I was thinking the " fellow " you mentioned was chasing the gold strips that came on the 1976 A model faring. I believe that all Black A model fairings were supplied with the strips installed. I have not seen any reference to them being sold separately. The M model strips are also a different pattern than the A model.

Perhaps Brian but he has several tour kit bikes so he may want more than one type and/or set. I've emailed you his details, he is definitely interested.

Wow! An excellent specimen of the RE5!
Brian, before you take it apart, would you snap some pictures of the wiring in and around the battery, regulator, etc? Also I'd like to see some of the main wiring harness and cable routing under the tank. Much appreciated!
No hurry, I've been sidetracked due to work (5 weeks until retirement!) and installation of an original Pacifico fairing on my GL1000.
