I don't have my service manual with me right now. There not hard to do. I would suggest that if you're new to RE5 you would be best served by getting a service manual, and parts catalog. The parts catalog is good for showing exploited views of the different systems. You can get them @ www.Rotaryrecycle.com. Rotary Recycle has parts catalog on line, but I don't keep a computer next to the bike and if I did it would have grease on the screen. It does need to be timed 5 deg BTC not 10. Welcome to the world of rotarys. Hope it helps,

How critical is the 5 deg BTDC vs 10?? I'll have to check what mine is set at. I set it but I may have used the service manual setting but again I was talking to Sam about the time I set the timing. I just don't remember what I did now.
How does a 5 degree difference manifest itself in running?

When I reset my ignition timing from 10 to 5 deg. there was hardly any difference.
I was surprised that it was set at 10 deg. as I thought all 'A ' models were set to 5 deg?
I think Sam went for the in between setting at 8 deg.
As I remember the tick over seemed to be lumpier but smoother higher up the revs.

I believe you are right. Jess told me about the 8 deg. as I remember. see what happens when you don't have you're manual with notes in it.

On the Alt. is the markings for where top dead center is. You want to set the gap for the points when the pointer is @ 8 deg before top dead center. I know you want to get them set. I get home Tuesday and will be able to look up the point gap.

Points shold be set at 0.45mm + or - 0.05mm.
As I would guess that you don't have metric feeler gauges, that translates to 0.0177 + or - 0.0002 inches.
Bottom line, 17 thousandths is a good starting point. Always adjust points, then check timing as dwell angle affects timing.
One edition of the manual says timing is 10 degrees, one says 5... it depends on the edition.
8 degrees is a good starting place. Some engines are happiest with a little more, some a littles less. It depends on many factors.
Best,
Jess

Dad was thinking that they had a bulliten where they eliminated the second set of points. Does anyone know if this is true? The Wikipedia on the RE5 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzuki_RE5 says the later model did not have the second set of point and this seems to support the remembrance.
