Sent to me by a friend of mine. Circa 1976, Iron Butt RE5A 'round Australia. Note the custom seat.

Wayne,
A few years ago, I did a run to Key West, Florida for a burger. It is a little over 1000 miles each way from my house. I did it one shot.
On my way back, at about the 1400 mile mark, I pulled into a gas stop and it took me 5 minutes to get off the bike. I figured I was done.
When I was in the country store paying, they had a stack of saddle blankets, and I thought... what the hell.
I threw it on the saddle and strapped it down and was able to make it the rest of the way home. It made a HUGE difference.
Never tried it on an Re5, but I have never done that kind of mileage on an re5. I’m not sure that I could do much more than 200 miles on a stock Re5 seat.
Just my 2 cents

Wow! That's staggering mileage. I hope the burger was good!
I'm intrigued. Having issues with my GL1800 seat at the moment (or maybe that should read that I'm having issues with my butt). Bought one of those air hawk bladder things. I might toss a pillow on and see what happens.

I'm not sure that I could do more than 100 on one. . unless it has that custom seat you used to have on the "White" bike, that seat is WAY more comfortable

Have y'all used those wooden bead cusion/cover on a bike or even a car seat? I saw a few touring bikes at the Barber show with them and I was curious how well they worked.

Looks like a comfortable backrest,too.
I have not been shy about the limitations of the stock seat comfort as far as long distance touring is concerned.
A big help is shorter rides to work up to a long trip. Three consecutive 600 mile days were very demanding and not soon forgotten.
I think I bought a sheeps skin seat cover probably at an Indian reservation which also greatly helped.
The GS-850 was a big seat improvement with dual foam internals although a little tall as a result.

Back in the day I rode my RE5 touring bike around lake Michigan. The seat rubbed my butt raw after three days riding two up. Might have been the nights spent in the tent. The stock seat didn't help though. Bought a saddle seat after that trip and had no further issues.
