Hi dear friends of RE5,
I have cleaned my cab in a ultrasoning machine after dismantle every parts and I have noted where all parts must back.
To my big surprise I have found 2 balls around 3 mm diameter in the bottom of my cleaner machine coming from the carb.
I can't see in the manual where they can come from, doesn't anyone can help me ?
Thanks to any comment.
Regards.
Marc

I so want to make up a story about the balls and the previous owner, but since this is a first time post, I hope someone else will pick this up and tell him. Jeff

Hi Marc,
I think the collective forum may help you with this question. I will post a picture of where one ball should go and it has a plug in the bottom of the float bowl. I have a new plug available and some helpful tips before you put in the plug. I will post a picture later for you.

Marc, Here is where the plug sets and under it sets the inlet check ball for the accelerator pump. Make sure you have the brass toothpick shown. Use a dowell or suitable tool to dress the ball seat. Whittle it down to insure it is cleaning the area where the ball will sit and seal. Currently I am thinking the previous owner lost the plug and tried a second ball to help seal? I am not recalling a second ball right now. I can't stress the importance of a clean seat for the ball.

Timpa, Thanks for your explanations but I am not sure to understand because: - the first plug on the left of the high tube is not removable and it has a needle in the middle of it, so there is no possibility to have a ball below it. - the second plug on the left of the high tube have a small ball and a spring build in it, so I don't think that an additional ball is possible or usefull. on my side I have found 2 holes on the motor side of the carb. that can host my balls: If you can check on your carb if it get balls in the holes designated by the blue arrows it would be helpful for me. No balls go at your blue arrows.
My first PIC has the brass plug in place covering the inlet check ball in the bottom of the float bowl. Hope that helps.

Hi Marc, This brass plug is the one that is visible at the bottom of the float bowl in Tim's photo. The ball goes in there. It's a check valve feeding into the accelerator pump. It stops backflow into the bowl when the accelerator pump works. I can't think of another ball, I think there's only one. It's becoming quite common to see this (and other) RE5 carb plugs come loose. After I put them back in, I peen over the alloy casting a tiny bit to hold it in place.

Thanks for your help.
I have a comment: the brass plug in the bottom of my bowl is fully in place, so the ball can't escape from that place. Also the balls I get are brass or copper, so not like a check ball but more like to plug a hole. That is why I have asked if you have a ball into the holes where I have put the blue arrows.

There is one here, not at your previous arrow. And one here if you have the early accel. pump arm. Tim

After a detailed check I have found 3 more holes without balls (see the picture) I am not sure if the 2 first holes have a plug if someone can have a look at his carb... The third one I am sure it need a ball. So I have 2 balls either for 3 holes or for 1 hole so I still have an issue... Question : how would you play to put back the balls ? glue it ?

I would gently stake it in place with a few taps with a center punch, or peen them over as Wayne suggests.
Yes, the third picture shows the missing plug. The First two are float bowl vents.
Good luck.
