Hello,
Took a trip yesterday on my RE-5. Had difficulty starting the bike. The temperature was about 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 Celsius). It just wouldn't start. Thought I flooded it out, cleaned the plug, used ether, nothing... Decided to use the kick start, fired up first kick...
Traveled to a motorcycle charity event in Oley Pennsylvania about 15 miles away. The bike ran well, it was the highest speed cruise I have ever taken the bike on. My speedometer said I was going about 55. My speedo must be sticky because it takes a very long time to ramp up. My brother-in-law was following on a Sportster and he said I was going about 60. The bike seemed to like 5th gear and about 3500 rpm.
There were a lot of bikes there, some of them vintage but most of them were newer. There was a Velocette and a Nimbus.
They had a slow bike contest. Slowest bike around the course with out touching (dabbing?) their foot would win. I did not enter.
As usual when I pulled up a bunch of people came over to see the RE-5. I answered the usual questions and comments, "What is that?" "I never knew Suzuki made a Rotary." Met an old Suzuki Dealer that said he had sold about 10 Re5s. He said he only had to replace one proper unit that was locked up tight. He was not allowed to break the seal and shipped it off to Suzuki and got a replacement. He also said he had a new plug and oil filter for it and that I was welcome to them. Nice, I'll be visiting him soon! I could have chatted about the bike the whole time but I was cold and hungry so I went inside. Looked out from time to time to see the ubiquitous crowd around it.
When I was leaving a few people waited around to watch me start it. It blew a lot of smoke, probably because of the cold weather?
Had a wiring issue but I'll post that in the repair section.
