Hello fellow RE-5 enthousiast. Maybe someone with more technical background could help me with this problem. After restoration of my re-5 my gearposition indicator worked fine..no problem at all. but...after filling my gearbox with oil and after my first run after 25 years (only 5 miles) my indicator told 4 in first gear and 5 in second...no neutral. Something must have gone wrong..strangely it is an all-new contact-unit. I disassembled it ..cleaned and still it does the same thing. Does anyone know how to fix this...there is a copper plate and two little springs inside but I don't think they can be assembled in the wrong way.

I await with interest for the answer to this one as mine does exactly the same, always has, I figured next time it was on the bench I'd sort it, but it's never had to go on the bench.

I had been fixing an oil leak from the position indicator a while back and had the same problem. Turns out that where the position indicator fits into the gearbox, there is a recess for the indicator to slot in to. The lever is sort of triangular in shape and goes into a matching slot in the gearbox. You probably have it installed 180 deg out is my guess.
Cheers Gareth

That's exactly what I thought it would be when I finally get round to sorting it out, it's the same as my kettle. :-)

It looks the triangular lever only fits all the way in in one position (I may be wrong)...But my indicator worked fine until I filled up the gearbox with oil and rode around the block. It suddenly only gave 4th and 5th gear and no neutral.I suppose the gearbox needs to be in neutral position when assembling the unit or is that not important.? BTW fellow RE-5 MB friends forgive my poor English as schooldays were some 35 years ago :-)
