Finally had some time to play with the bike- resealed proper mounted up, new clutch, bearings & primary chain installed.
Tried to get her running yesterday but just didn't want to idle, ran like sheet, and only with choke on and so on.
REbuilt my second bike's carby, noticed that the nos acc pump diaphragm in the original carby had gone hard (with no use).
New carby on and she's away! Starts quite well, idles, revs, gets hot nice and quick, cooling fan not working, tons of smoke out the left exhaust (where the old motor leaked oil from the proper unit while on the side stand).
So, she starts, runs, does what she should, just need to get the coolant switch swapped over from the other bike as this one is kaput, and it should be test ride time. First time she's run in four years!
Had to share.... ;D

Well done Andy. I bet you felt great after all that work on rebuild It would be interesting to see your compression results as it gets run in. Enjoy. Best Rog

Thanks Rog. Yes, it will be interesting. Don't forget that this is re-using old apex seals and springs, which whilst around the service limit, are still not like using new bits. I haven't tested it yet- it is certainly ok as it starts up alright.

This is a quick youtube upload- tons of smoke out of the left exhaust- the old proper unit poured oil out of the exhaust port. Mostly into the left muffler while it was on the side stand. Clearing up now but really needs a ride. Tomorrow hopefully!

Hi Andy nice to see it is possible to strip and rebuild one of these units, and get it running again, congratulations.
Regards Stuart.

Thanks Stuart, and I didn't even have that many bolts left over either... These motors have been rebuilt before by RE5Norway but I think I'm the first to reprofile the oil control rings. So far so good! Only a small haze of smoke now but that's 2 stroke as I'm premixing at the moment at 100:1. In my Mazda rotaries, this used to give a slightly smoky exhaust but safe.

One thing I forgot to mention- the terrible rattle this bike had at idle and above has now gone. New primary chain and input shaft bearing may have solved that.

Cheers Bill. It wasn't dead tho- just failing to proceed. It looks alot worse than it is- 4 years of dust on it and lots of surface rust...
Now to sort the myriad of little niggling faults- just found a little hose from the filler stem to the ?overflow? tank leaking. Time to fit the sparie I bought from Sam Costanza quite some time ago!
