Sorry -- I'm the new boy in the school. I just bought a 1976 RE-5 that I've wanted for nearly forty years. The bloke I bought it from started it -- it seemed a little reluctant, which was blamed on a flat battery, but it DID start, and he rode it into my truck.
I got it home, and I charged up the battery. With a fully charged (and tested) battery, it turned over twice. Now, it just clicks. I tried the kick starter, but it is very difficult to move. It feels just like a high compression motor that's just starting to seize.
I thought about pulling the plug and seeing if it will turn over more easily, and to listen to try and tell if something is binding.
Help! What do I do?!

Put the bike on the center stand.
Pull the plug... Put the bike in gear, turn it over using the rear wheel.
Get back to us and let us know the results.
Best,

Also, check there's oil in it!
These things are quite difficult to kickstart- helps if you're 100kg or more... and they need a pretty serious battery as well.
Good luck!

I managed to stop at the house long enough to A) confirm oil is in it, and B) pull the plug and shift the transmission into fifth gear. I can rotate the motor by rotating the rear wheel. It still seems stiff to me, but I've never dealt with a Wankel before.
When I get home tonight, I'll attempt to bypass the solenoid.

Well, it's definitely the starter; good current across the solenoid when the starter is pushed, and a direct line to the starter produces....a cold and complete silence and stillness.
In fact, it sort of reminds me of a woman I used to date.....wait, wait -- wrong forum for THAT story. Sorry!
