My 76 is running well and I'm happy with it , but I have 2 questions .
1. It smokes during initial startup with choke on and then after chokes off. When it's warmed up it stops smoking . Is this normal ? Also proper is getting oil from carb .
2. Churn at 4 k RPM I think it's normal , but I don't want to harm the engine . Need someone to tell me to just wind it out and the churning is normal .
Any feedback would be appreciated . I do love the bike , but only have piston bikes as comparrison . Regards, CPKID

The smoke on startup is possibly worn oil control rings in the rotor unit. If you can put up with it, no a huge deal. If you want to fix it, proper unit needs to come out and be rebuilt..........
The churn at 4K has been described alot by nearly everyone here- it's a characteristic of the motor. Apparently it can be made worse by poor tuning, timing etc. Also not to be confused with clutch basket rumble, which normally happens lower down.

Another explanation that I've heard about the smoke is also from a rotary mechanic as Andy is. He said it's the O ring that seals the central oil passage through the rotor (I think it sits in a little U shaped metal ring). He says that it hardens with age and on shutdown can allow oil to seep past and pool in the lower chambers thus the smoke on start up that then clears.
I find that while they do this after along lay up, after riding them regularly, this seems to stop after a couple of thousand klm. Perhaps the O ring softens with use and heat. If it doesn't, then maybe it's the oil control rings or the O ring is too far gone.

Spot on Wayne. You can get excessive startup smoke from worn oil control rings (the metal rubbing face) or knackered rubber o rings which sit inside them (the oil control ring is a U shaped ring in cross section). Oil seeps past into the combustion area and gets burnt when you start up. Mine was doing it with a passion so let's hope my rebuilt unit is good.
When I took my old unit out, a large pool of oil leaked out of the exhaust manifold when I took that off after I rotated the motor by hand- clearly oil had pooled in the bottom of the rotor chamber.
Also, with the rumble, check the band around the outside of the clutch drum. Mine showed signs of pretty severe chattering so I welded the b@stard on to the drum. Ain't gunna chatter any more.

Thanks for the replies . I'm just being cautious . After rebuilding the transmission and struggling to get it running right I just didn't want to take any chances . It really is a unique motorcycle , and I'm glad I have it . I'm going to ride it more often. I have yet to see another running RE5 in Pennsylvania . All the input and advice on this forum certainly helped a great deal . Happy trails . Good North East riding the next month or so.
