Here's one that has me scratching my head.I've put the first 100 miles on my 75 RE5 and am overall real pleased with how it runs.It does have the occasional flat spot when accelerating so I wanted to go over it make sure all simple adjustments were still in order. The bike always starts good hot or cold but I was curious where the timing was set at.I used the plug snap method. With the key on,plug out near the timing hole,I turned the engine ccw.I stopped when I heard the snap but there were no timing marks within sight. After several revolutions,I realized it snaps about 180 degrees off. What am I over looking or doing wrong.I don't know if the engine has ever been apart but I couldn't imagine the balance wheel or anything Else could work 180 off.Any advice?Thanks--TMorgan

You are probably turning the engine in the wrong direction.

Just to follow up on bdalameda's comment, you say that you are turning the engine CCW. If you are facing it from the left side, then you are indeed turning it the wrong way. The engine rotates backwards in relation to the bike. Turn it CW when facing it from the left side.

Ah yeah-What a differance that direction thing makes.About 180 degree differance.Boy do I feel foolish, but more importantly,at least my bikes OK.Now the whole RE comunity must be scratching thier heads thinking"how in the world did this guy even get his bike to run in the first place".I came up with the ccw rotation from the service manual(page 150),starting with checking the point gap and moving on to timing advance. After reading it again I realized they were using a timing beeper of some sort.Any way,all is good and thanks to all that set me striaght.I'm going for a ride now in hopes of blowing the egg off my face. As Wayne says TM, no shame on here, if we all knew everything there would be no need for this forum, but thank the good lord for it's existence, it's responsible for keeping most of the worlds running RE5's................ running.
(apologies if I offended any of the groups Christians)

That's brilliant, looks like Jim Jefferies has a new fan.
