I hope this is relevant to a few people with running issues. My bike was running ok then started to hesitate, cut out, started easliy again after just a few seconds and then would run for x amount of time, one minute to 30 minutes, and then it didn't want to start - very reluctant!
I run a modern ignition system with a modern coil, however I noticed that when I was cranking the engine manually to check the timing for the umpteeth time, there was a crack sound from the ignition coil as though the coil was breaking down internally. There was still a spark at the plug, but not as intense as normal.
So basiscally the coil was searching for an earch, taking the easy route out and arcing internally, which gradually got worse until the bike wouldn't start.
I removed the earth cable from the engine, cleaned all the terminals etc, fitted a new coil, bingo, no problem! I do now believe that overlooking the simple things i.e. bad earth is very easy to do and to dismiss without a second thought.

You say you removed the earth cable from the engine, where did you put it?

When I said removed the earth cable, I didn't say in the message that I'd put it back! After cleaning the terminals I did put it back, my earth connection onto the engine is the same as when I bought the bike. Just to the left hand side of the kickstart shaft one of the cap head bolts that fastens the outer case is where my earth wire is connected. Not sure if this is the same on all bikes, but it's just where mine was connected.
When I purchased my bike, I did take the cover off the starter motor and found quite a lot of carbon dust. Having blown all that out I've not since had a problem. I have known some people to keep churning the engine over on the starter motor until it becomes very very hot and also the cabling, which tends to destroy the installation properties on the wiring.
Best of luck, Regards Guy

My ground cable (from the battery to the primary chain case) had what I call the green weenies. The copper in the cable had started to corrode and turned green. While cranking the engine over this cable became hot. No amount of cleaning will save something like this. I replaced it with a new one. I found a 4 gauge 18 inch cable at O Rielly auto parts that fit just fine.
I also checked the fuse on the small positive wire and it was full of water! I replaced that also.
The lights are now brighter, it spins over much faster.
Next, I need to tackle the carb ;D
