My RE5 is running just great!!!.... until it isn't, then it is, then isn't, then almost is but just before it is it isn't.
Anyway, it runs great then suddenly just shuts down, like I turned the key off. Next think I know it's going again. It has done this a couple times in the past but I always thought it was something carb related before or maybe crud in my fuel tank plugging the lines. But now that I have the carb working perfectly and cleaned the tank out I have come to the realization that it isn't fuel.
Now it is getting worse. Today I was on the highway, after about 10 minutes it cut out then was so bad I wasn't sure I could make it to my friend's house another mile away. After it sat a couple hours I headed for home and now about 5 minutes in it started cutting out. Maybe after the coil warms up it develops an intermittent failure? Or could it be points? I never messed with points before so no clue there. Any other part of the re5 ignition system I need to be thinking about? thanks

CDI unit perhaps, my last RE5 did a similar thing just before the gave up completely. The tell tale sign was no high pitch squeal coming from the unit. Luckily for me, once I opened up the CDI unit, it was just a couple of diodes that had failed which I replaced then the unit was fine again.

Have you tried cleaning the grounds/mounting points for the CDI and Coil?
Possibly the ability to dissipate heat has been hampered, and it is shutting off intermittently because it has reached its thermal threshhold.
Oh, Please send some warm weather up my way (NY).

My cdi still makes the high pitch whine normally, but who knows when it stalls. I will check grounds and mounting areas on cdi and coils, thanks for the tip. I would send you some warm weather but I like it too much to let it go.

I had a similar problem on my bike, it turned out to be the spark plug. Left the bike for a while, it would start up and run for maybe 3/4 miles, then cut out. Leave to cool maybe 30 minutes, and then the bike would start ok and run again for a short distance, maybe 2/3 miles. Even called out International Rescue i.e. the wife, with a gallon of fuel because I was sure it was a fueling problem. When I got home, I installed my R@R adaptor and fitted a modern plug and the fault disappeared.
Hope this helps Regards Guy

Hmm, interesting. I will take a look at my plug. I think I have a spare. Will have to get the adaptor one of these days.

There is another "Thunderbirds" fan out there besides me? .......International Rescue i.e. the wife, with a gallon of fuel because I was sure it was a fueling problem. When I got home, I installed my R@R adaptor and fitted a modern plug and the fault disappeared. Hope this helps Regards Guy

So it doesn't seem to be the plug. I couldn't find my other plug but I did clean up that one above, almost looks new! Since the problem has been getting worse I can now reproduce it right away and even got it on video on the center stand in the garage!

I'll go with ignition mod or coil.
Still, try another plug. Even clean plugs can develop a crack in the insulator that might open up and short out when they heat up.
Good Luck, please keep us posted.

Good point on cracked insulator, will probably order up a plug adapter this week.

I'm stoked, ordering up the new ignition system from Rotary Recycle along with a plug adapter. Once I get that in I should have me a nice reliable re5!

Just received the electronic ignition from Jess, looks like a nice setup! Hopefully I can get that installed this next week.

another thing to remember with plugs is that they can give a good spark when out of the engine just in the cap but can break down when underload in the engine also even if you change the plug and get same problem do not discount that they new plug can be defective.over the last 30 odd years we have had about 8 brand new plugs defective

Got the electronic ignition installed a couple weeks ago and just got it timed today. strangely when timing it the light was flashing in a way that made me see double lines exactly 2 degrees apart, so I could see the 10 degree line twice and had to guess which one was right. Might have to work on that some more.
