Hi Guys, not posted for some time.Out on the RE5 on a dual carriageway doing about 60 mph when I noticed the oil pressure light on.Came safely to a stop and the whole of the back end was covered in oil.Lucky not to have come off!The gasket for the trochoid oil pump had given way.On dismantling I found the gasket where it is narrowest in width[next to the metering pump cover] had been possibly re-used by a previous owner and black silicone sealant had been used only in this narrow area to reinforce the damaged gasket.I refilled the sump with oil and when cranked the oil is forced out of this area.I have installed a new gasket but think the proper unit may be kaput. There is compression and the bike fires up but the revs are erratic with popping in the exhaust. On removing a plug it looked like a drop of water on the firing tip.Think the seals inside the proper unit are shot. Never heard of that gasket failing before. Sounds like you caught it quickly - surprised it damaged anything.

Shaun, what was the temperature gauge saying just before you pulled over ?
If the temp was okay or within normal range at least, I would be mildly surprised if you did damage. As well as lubricating, that oil, more so than a four stroke of the day, is an internal cooling system so something serioulsy awry would be indicated by high water temp.
Any damage to the engine could have be done previously to this failure.

I've had that gasket go on me before, luckily it happened in the shop. When it collapsed, oil shot a good distance.
Edit: The Gasket failed on me because (i suspect) the powder coated housings I had just recently finished compressed and the proper torque needed to contain that gasket eventually vanished. I learned from that one.

Hi Wayne, unfortunately I was so focused on the oil pressure light being on and coming to a safe stop amongst the traffic I paid no attention to the temp reading, although it seemed no hotter than usualIt was running ok .I,ve tried the usual carb, ignition, port valve routes etc but at the moment still have erratic running and popping in the exhaust. However there has been issues of popping in the exhaust [but no erratic tickover] previously so perhaps you are right about engine problems developing before the oil loss. Shaun.
