A very original RE5M has popped up on US ebay, with lots of very clear photos which is always good as you can learn from them. cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200694362836&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:1123What caught my eye is the shot of the black flip cover over the filler cap, it has the usual 'Check engine oil level' decal in the usual spot, but below that near the trailing edge of cover it has the 'Use unleaded gasoline only' decal and that location is new to me, but the bike and the decal look remarkably unmolested. I've never fitted that decal because I was unsure where it went, so can anyone with an original bike comment? Mick.........kettle738

There are actually two different decals used on RE5s - I think which one is used depends on what country the bikes were sent to. One just says FUEL the other says Use Unleaded Gasoline Only.
All the US bikes just say FUEL on the decals to the best of my knowledge.

That's interesting, didn't know that....I always thought the unleaded gasoline decal went underneath the black hinged cover, to the rear of the filler cap, whereas the fuel decal is just forward of the fuel filler, but as there is not really sufficient room and it doesn't look right I've never fitted one, just left it out.....optional market decals would explain it.
Hopefully someone with this decal fitted from new will tell us where it goes.
Many thanks..........Mick........kettle738

I have noticed some warning decal placement differences between bikes for various countries. I have seen some pictures of a decal under the fuel door above the fuel cap that says Unleaded Fuel Only. My bike has a decal that just says FUEL there. I think the difference may be that the RE5 came to the US at the same time leaded fuels were no longer sold in the US so warning to not run leaded fuels was not necessary.

I brought a set of warning decals from Sam a few years ago and they came with a location/placement sheet which showed the fuel and unleaded decal under the flap, i may still have it somewhere.

I have that decal location sheet too and it's excellent, however while there is clearly space for the 'Fuel' decal just ahead of the filler neck, the 'Use unleaded gasoline' decal is shown to the rear of the filler, right where the cover hinge is, so there is no space for it.
I have to say I think the 'Unleaded' decal on the ebay bike looks wrong and I suspect that from what has been said it is a matter of fitting either the fuel decal OR the 'Unleaded gasoline' decal just forward of the filler cap.
But I'm just guesing, so if anyone knows for certain please say.

Almost all the US models had the FUEL decal just above the fuel cap. Just recently I saw an unrestored original tank the had the Use Unleaded Fuel only in the same place just above the fuel cap. I know on several GT750's and GT550's that I have restored the warning labels placements were different from bike to bike at times. I have also seen an original RE5 that had the RE Oil decal under the seat on the frame rail near the injection tank fill cap. Most of these were placed on the LH sidecover.

I have an original A model and it still has its 1977 IOWA registration label on it.
The unleaded fuel decal is on the tank underneath the black lid and in front of the gas cap. The lid has a "Check engine oil etc" decal on it and on the tank behind the black lid is a warning about brake fluid.

PS Don't get too fussy about decal placement. Some of the alignments on this very original bike are pretty wonky.

Thanks Wayne, I think that confirms it is an either or fitment which tells me all I need to know. I agree that some of the decals can be a bit wayward, but when you fit them yourself it's impossible to do it without trying to get it spot on.
