I tried something a little different on my RE5 today. For years I have been using an ignition device on my large bore dirt bikes like my KTM's etc. called an IKat. It plugs onto the plug wire between the coil and the sparkplug. The IKat is not a capacitor but some kind of device that changes the spark voltage curve to allow a lower voltage spark but of longer duration. Anyway they have proven to me to make large bore kick start four strokes much easier to start especially when hot. The engine seem to idle better and have smoother throttle response as well. Nothing earthshaking but a definite improvement. I have had one of these kicking around my garage for the last couple of years and I decided to try it on my RE5. I just got back from a 30 mile ride and I have to say it has definitely changed the throttle response and smoothed things out quite a bit. Definitely feels crisper and more low end pull off a stop - the idle has changed and I had to lean it out a bit. I think this is a worthwhile add-on to the RE5. I guess these ignition boosters are now sold under the name IBooster. I know that this sounds like snake oil but I have used these for many years and found them to have some definite benefits. The device inside the IKat is called a "GBsixT Electron Catalyst" Someone I knew cut one open to see what was inside and this was stamped on the device. Anyway just an FYI.
Also - In a few weeks I will be posting a "how to" on building a replacement CDI ignition for the RE5 using off the shelf components. I have been able to put together a very reliable system that should not cost more than about 50 to 100 dollars to produce.
