Hi, re the infamous carburettor / port valve flat spot; has anyone ever noted whether the character or nature of the flat spot changes according to whether the port valve is opening too late or too soon in relation to the secondary throttle plate?
My port valve arms touch at 35 degrees; spot on as far as I can see. I can't get it any better, so I'm not sure which way to adjust. Everything else is good, starting, idle speed, clean running up to the point it hits the flat spot; then it's a stuttering hesitation that feels like a misfire.
For example if simple power loss meant the port valve was opening too soon, or stuttering / misfire suggests it was opening too late it would give a valuable clue as to which way to adjust and possibly save a lot of wasted time and effort.
Anyone have any experience of that, or is it just trial and error.
Regards.......kettle738

From the Re5 service bulletins Sam sells on Carbs and related issues, after reading the ritual for setting the cables you'll pull your hair out. I'd like to say the hesitation would be more pronunced from a retarded opening position, but some engines might like it so, while other might like a little advanced opening.. Jess what say you before i get to working on mine, since the carb needs a kit and all the cables look seriously suspicious to me with regards to being correctly set. Oh and it has the flat spot which i plan to fix regardless of how much time it takes...
