Hi All, new to this forum, lots of knowledge here I guess. My 76 RE5A has a coolant leak from the telltale hole on the water pump casing. There is no sign of oil, just coolant, and no sign of coolant in the engine oil.
The book suggests I should remove the large transmission cover including the ignition, oil pump etc etc and renew the water and oil seal at the same time. I can see the sense in renewing both, but if I'm correct and the oil seal is fine it seems like a pile of grief to replace the water seal which is accessible underneath the small pump cover.
My question is, can the water seal be replaced by the seemingly 'simple' short method and are there any difficulties in removing the seal with the pump shaft still in situ.
If I have to remove the large cover (I have the gasket etc) are there any likely issues with the oil pump or ignition removal?
I'm hoping someone out there has already done this.
Regards.....kettle738

The cover will pull off. You must line up line on counter wieght and pointer on case. (pic on bottom of page 15 in service manual) On the cover line up punch mark on timing gear and arrowhead mark on outer case (top of page 16) not shure if you need to have the oil seal installer No.2 and water seal installer. I'm looking into that, I think I mybe puting in new seals on my bike.

You have to do it from the clutch cover side.
You will need a tool to install the seal. Sam can provide you with one, or you can make one if you have a lathe.
It is next to impossible to instal the seal without breaking it if you do not have the proper sized instalation tool.
I am getting ready to go on vacation for the holiday week... But if anyone needs more detail they can contact me after the 28th and I will take measurements of the tool.
Best,
Jess

Jess a pair of the water pump tools showed up on fleabay recently but it went without me being there so i missed it. Can you post the dimensions of the installer and remover so anyone with a lathe or access to one can make them.
