I have had this happen to me in a car.
Came down to a poor earth and a bad cell in the battery.
I know you said its a new battery but see what the voltage is when starting in and out of the bike.

I'm finally getting around to looking at this bike again. ( I keep dropping it in favour of easier projects - I just revived a 1972 Bonneville not used since '85 - so much simpler than the RE5). I have bought a NOS starter motor, I hope this cranks the motor faster than the one I have.

I replaced the starter motor, the new one spins about 4x faster than the last one. I have a really nice spark, but the bike is not firing yet, not with starter fluid in the carb intake or gas down the plug hole. The troubleshooting continues...........

If you have fuel, a good spark and timing is ok, whats the compression like? A bike with low compression will sound ok when spun on starter motor but will not fire, I had a similar problem in the past.

The bike seems to have good compression even though it has high mileage. I'm not sure if it is sparking at the right time, I'm trying to static time it with the spark plug method, but it is way off.

It should be quite easy to static time with a meter across the points and use the timing marks under the small cover on the side of the gererator housing (ignition off). Use a socket on the gererator bolt (uner the Suzuki badge and rubber bung) to turn the motor.

I checked the compression and it is low . (I did not realize that the plug hole at the rotor end was so small in diameter, I think that causes some pretty healthy sounding compression sounds even though it is low.) I've squirted oil down the plug hole and rotated it, the compression has come up some, but is still only about 55 psi. I'll take the exhaust off and take a look at the apex seals. The bike has been sitting since 1988, and has over 60K miles so it's not too surprising.

Just a quick one- if the spark is miles off and the static timing is about right, check that your points gap isn't too big- that will change the timing drastically.
