Thanks for all the input and advice, after a bit of a gasket disaster that delayed things by about ten days, I finally put it back together yesterday, taking the opportunity to fit one of Jess' water pump bushes while it was apart. After priming the oil system etc she fired on the first attempt and the difference is nothing less than incredible.
It sounds like a different bike now, so quiet, all the rattling has gone and the whizzing noise it makes when revved at a standstill is much reduced; my guess is that noise was produced by the worn primary chain.
In conclusion, I think the rattling was down to serious wear on one of the the thrust washers and the starter clutch boss creating a clearance...........suggestions as to why this happened would be appreciated.
