You don't have to go far in AU to lose cell phone coverage. Not too bad with our main provider (Telstra) but even with them, I'm out of coverage for large parts of my rides.
As for breakdowns, I recall as a child in the early '60's family drives with several cars and all too common for one of the ladies to be slipping off her pantyhose to make do as a temporary fan belt.

I'll fess up, I stuffed a tow-rope (harbor freights finest) in my Fairing pocket for this trip to Colorado. Another member posted, we now have cell phones, and most insurance or AMA has free towing. We have AMA style of towing here in most states (NRMA in NSW, RACQ in QLD, RACV in Vicoria etc) but last I checked, the NSW service at least won't pick up motorcycles. I should check on that. You're on your lonesome if you break down on a motorbike although there are plenty of companies that will pick the bike up for a fee.

November, 2024: Another quick one, overnight to Nundle NSW. Around 700 klm. Rapidly approaching 60,000 klm total. Here's a tightly edited 6 minute video touring on the RE5 with a bunch of moderns (mind you, this is the local "Classic" club and as I commented, other than the Rotary, the only bleeding classics are the ageing riders!). Aussie country side and country towns:

Pics from the Nundle trip: Some "Classic" club, at least there's one bike flying the vintage flag. Awesome bunch of guys, wouldn't leave me and carry on while I changed a burned out plug. They had to make sure I was good to go: Dinner on the upstairs verandah of a classic Aussie Pub (The Peel Hotel at Nundle). The ladies on the left, Will and Jayne, both ride and Will has been pillion on the back of her husband's RE5. Note the back of my shirt and if you haven't seen this before, the text below the Suzuki RE5 says "Owner Rider..........and you thought you were crazy!": Quaint little guest house where the RE got a fair bit of attention from passers by and the two burly but good natured farm boys on the left (too young to know of a rotary engine motorcycle but very interested regardless): At Chaffey Dam on the Peel River: Less bags than last time but bigger!

Thanks for sharing your pretty countryside and for your friends.
I wondered how you captured your bikes exhaust note without all the wind noise, remote mic?

Thanks for sharing your pretty countryside and for your friends. I wondered how you captured your bikes exhaust note without all the wind noise, remote mic? Glad you enjoyed Tim. I specifically bought the camera to facilitate tests I was running that really needed sound matched to vision and my friend's GoPro had such good sound I thought it may work even though his was used in a sheltered environment. Not a remote mic, raw GoPro. It's behind the fairing even when it's on the chin mount. Nevertheless, I was very surprised. I'd even bought a wind muffler for the GoPro which looks like a foam block with holes cut out to squeeze the camera in with only the lens and screen showing. Not required at all. Such good sound.

Another milestone today. Hit 60,000 klm, ahead of schedule! Here's my compression history. I'd treat these as +/- a couple of PSI. Same machine but temps, pressures and battery condition uncontrolled. Lobes, so far, very even: 26,000 klm - 130 psi 32,000 klm - 130.6 40,000 klm - 131.5 50,000 klm - 132.2 60,000 klm - 128.0

You are approaching the first quarter of the proper life expectancy, contrary to an illustration by Suzuki indicating a shorter life span. Awesome.

Thank you Tim, good to know. I've been riding a naked 136 psi-er last couple of days back to back with mine. My tour kit increases the bike's weight by about 25 kg but even so, the extra power is clear to see.
However, more than happy with my bike and lots of miles left.
