Quawk, you're right. The needle needs to be close to the far right white line to come on. Under typical conditions, a sorted bike will rarely cross the half way mark. See the thread below for a general guideline to typical temps. If you let the bike sit and idle it will reach the point where the fan comes on. I wouldn't recommend and Suzuki warned against high temp running. But as a one off to test your fan switching, go ahead. If the bike's not roadworthy, best to have a household fan handy and when the bike's fan comes on, switch the household fan on to flow through the radiator and help bring the temps back to middle range before shutting down. Rotaries have thermal issues unlike a regular ICE with two thirds of the casing very hot from compression, ignition and exhaust and one third perpetually receiving the cool intake charge. A sudden shutdown at high temps is not good. EDIT: based on Timpa's information, if the bike's roadworthy, go for a spin after the fan comes on to stabilize and reduce temperatures before shutting down. re5rotary.proboards.com/thread/2937/temperature-normal-coolant-radiator-gauge

Let it come on and then go for the road test. Tim Very important precautionary notes from Wayne.

Unfortunately, road testing in my neck of the woods is out of the question for the time being. High temps during the day have been in the teens (F.)(Ughh...) here on the frozen tundra of Illinois with some slick snow packed and icy roads around home. When starting in my shop have been using a large fan in front of the bike to try and simulate road type air flow. Can't wait till spring for a number of reasons.

Great info from Tim. I'll edit my original. I assumed the bike wasn't yet rideable but that's a much better way to stabilize temps and bring them down.
