This is an edited version of a recent GROUP BUY thread. As it generated discussion not relevant to a GROUP BUY post, I replicate most of it below as a catalyst should anyone wish to discuss. One of Australia's most fastidious and multiple award winning restorers (Mike Samootin) has been pulling down his spectacular RE5 restoration because he believes he made too many compromises. One of those is his AM seat cover. There are many available, none of them are exact matches. Mike has enlisted Australia's premier AM seat cover manufacturer to attempt this. He has another board member who is contributing an original seat cover and they will attempt to make a precise heat stamp replica. When I say precise, they will not only attempt to match width and length of the stamp pattern, but the curvature at the corners of the individual rectangle patterns and even the angle of the individual stitches. This sort of detail may you suit you, it may not. I've also pointed out to Mike that some of the AM seat covers fail around the rear of the seat. They don't quite match the profile of the original. He assures me that this will be accounted for. On the right is a very nice example of an AM seat cover. It looks fantastic on the bike but next to an original, you can see the differences. Note also the slight untidiness at the rear.

I think there were two versions of the seat cover if we can believe that. The one on the left is from I believe Frame number 11157. The four rectangle blocks at the rear are all the same width. ( I know it doesn't look like it in the picture but they are ) The next original seat has the exact same wire configuration around the edge for attachment purposes which adds to my belief they are both O.E.M. The pattern radii is different in many places between these two covers. The Rotary Recycle cover can pass for an original without a side by side comparison as there are some differences in pattern radii . The perimeter wire is much smaller in the RR. The cover from the U.K seems to be very good material but has many variances from an original and I've not tried to fit it. To make an exact copy of anything is a tremendous amount of work to document every possible detail that would not have been necessarily to making the originals as as long as they were all the same. Some of these small details just did not matter to the O.E.M Brian
