Guys, I’m sure I’m in for a spanking for asking a stupid question, but Where do the two pipes, one from the left engine cover (bolt no 15) and one behind it on the engine casing go to ? The outside one goes to the air box and is presumably a breather, but it’s the inner one I’m asking about, it’s currently connected to the radiator overflow pipe on the filler neck, is that right ?
I did try and find the answer here first, and google images too, but figured you lot are the best option.

Yes, the outer one pointing straight up goes to the front left of the air filter box. The inner one angled forward goes to the top right side of the radiator filler neck.

Thank you Brian, I figured the overflow would just go into nowhere and dribble onto the road.
So where does any excess water go once it’s inside the motor ?

I think the plastic tank is called an expansion tank, and as the coolant heats/expands it is captured there and then drawn back to the radiator when it cools. Just under the cap should be a hose nipple facing rearward with a hose that runs to the rear of the transmission and exits just below the frame cross member in front of the center stand mount. If there is too much coolant this is where it makes it's exit from the system. Brian

I’m even more confused now. I have two short hoses that go via banjos on either side of the filler neck to both connections on the expansion tank, and the Long overflow pipe from just under the filler cap, that goes Into the engine case, not under the frame and away, but physically into the engine ?

Cancel the above confusion, I’ve just gone through Wayne’s post “strip down- photographic record” and it would appear my water system has been plumbed in drastically wrong. It might explain my overheating problem.
I now see what you meant Brian.

Wow, glad you found it Didge. That was one plumbing fumble by the previous owner. The overflow into the engine case........

Sussed it, my mistake, when I took the rad etc off I put the overflow pipe under the frame out of the way, I then didn’t see it cos it was with the loom etc.
The breather pipe routed perfectly to the filler neck so I stupidly presumed that’s where it had been previously.
Now the expansion tank is in situ I can see there’s no way what i had thought was happening could have happened.
I really am a class mechanic (NOT) and am sooooo grateful for the info and pictures on this site.
I’ve put my Dunce’s hat on and I’ll now go and sit on the stupid step.
Thank you Brian and Wayne.
