I think the first post in this thread about the optional Suzuki oil filter has a part number error 06510-05A00 should probably be 16510-05A00. The first five digits in Suzuki's P.N. system indicate what it is, the last five are what model it was originally used for. Parts list shows 16510-05A00 is available and is less than half of the cost of a 16510-37010 RE filter.

Brian Fixed. Thanks Brian. Re the non-return valve. I understand the valve in the original Suzuki filter is not a non-return valve but a pressure relief bypass valve. It's labelled as such in the service manual. About 20 years ago Terry in NZ sent an original filter to Repco or Ryco and they cut it open and then suggested a replacement which had similar features. It also had a bypass valve with, most likely, a lower release pressure. It would rattle on first start up in cold weather as the bypass fluttered with the cold oil. Once warm it would silence as the valve remained closed at operating temp. After looking at some more pictures and diagrams, definitely a pressure relief valve.

Any thoughts?Yes, you might try a heating blanket and/or some custom form fitting ear plugs.

Inside of the Stock RE filter P.N. 16510-37010 . As you can see, there is not an " Anti Drain Back Valve " but there is a By Pass Valve in the end of the filter element. This valve opens with a pressure differential between the inside and outside of the element. This could be caused by contaminants plugging the filter or cold oil not able to flow freely though the paper element. I did a pressure test with air and a regulator and the by pass will open at about 40 P.S.I. The spring in the picture is between the cover can and the element to hold the element to the mounting plate. It would be interesting to open the optional 16510-05A00 for a comparison. I have compared a few O.E.M to aftermarket filters for different applications and the O.E.M. have always had more filter area ( deeper and more pleats of paper ) and the paper would appear to have different ( Microns) levels of filtration. I have always preferred and trusted an O.E.M. filter when available.

Thanks Brian and Tim. You both saved one of my NOS filters which was hovering on the "cutaway" board for my attention.
Clears it up definitively.

Sorry i am puzzled, this is available in Germany: Product code GP10205-1925G. The datasheet is not saying anything about ash. That looks similar to UK version. Can I use it?

Additional recommendation is Suzukis current 10-40 petroleum oil.
I just called Suzuki USA and they assured me their current oil is backward compatible
in years applicable to the RE5.

ITEM IS AVAILABLE.ITEM # 990A0-01E10-01G Gallon. $24.95

Many years ago I was able to have the Suzuki Rotary oil evaluated and compared to 76
Union oil 20/50 racing oil. A very well respected competition piston engine assembler I
met was setting up his race engines for the Union racing oil. I fortunately got the
opportunity to have the Union Oil research lab , nearby in Brea, Ca. evaluate the
compatibility of the 76 oil to the Suzuki Rotary oil. Bottom line, it wasn't the best match
and my phone notes of the results said the Ash content of the Suzuki oil was .94

The filter 'element' within the stock filter housing looks suspiciously like the filter fitted to a DR650...

This "which oil" question really caught me.
I know it might be waste of time, because GTX seems to do the job but anyway
I found some interesting readings:

Lots of investigative effort into that Thesis. I haven't ruled out the new Mazda expected range extender . Timely and interesting article. Tim

Evaluating a new trans oil (for me anyway) Anything unexpected will update info. EDIT: It took a couple of hundred miles of short trips to be happy with the initial cold shift into First gear .
