I have heard anecdotal stories of some overfilling on various bikes and cars over the years.
There are valid instances of it where design inefficiencies exist, e.g. DR650s can easily handle an overfill resulting in subsequent slightly cooler running and better oil longevity with more of it available to dilute contaminants - I believe up to 500 ml extra is quite acceptable...
However, not all engines are designed for this and it would pay to follow manufacturer's instructions unless you were extremely familiar with a particular design, as more (oil) is not necessarily better.

Nice example! I have a 1990 dr650s I always worry about it running hot maybe I'll try a little extra oil.
