For 10 years I have been searching for a replacement for the one way starter clutch P/N 12650-37021. They have been obsolete since the mid eighties and the remaining stock of them is gone.
In the last five years when someone had a failure, the only thing I could supply was a “good used” unit. What that meant was that I had tested it, and believed it would work in application. For how long... who knew?
At 42 years, I am beginning to see them fail at an increasing rate. When one is failing, A push of the start button may engage the starter and crank the bike for a second, before it slips and the starter spins freely... with a bzzzzzzzzz... sound. Replacing the trans oil with a differnt grade than the manual recommends has added some life to failing units, but they will eventually fail.
Unfortunately, these are a very complex part to manufacture and accordingly very expensive.
About a year ago I purchased a group of parts and was happy to find an NOS unit still in the factory NSK- Warner box. I was able to, under magnification, find the original NSK -Warner number. This gave me some short lived hope that I might be able to find a cross reference for the unit. After contacting NSK, they did not even have a record that they produced the part.
I have sent a sample to several firms hoping they could match the unit with no luck. I then sent the unit to several companies that manufacture that particular type of part for other applications... with no luck. It is hard enough to find a company that will manufacture anything anymore... much less in a quantity other than by the thousands.
HOWEVER, I have recently found someone willing to manufacture some and in a quantity that is palatable.
I can get anywhere from 10-49 manufactured at a cost of just under 300.00 each.
If folks want this part and are willing to prepay, I will make the order.
If you wish to join the group buy. Post here in this thread. In a few weeks, if we have enough to make the minimum. I will ask the moderators to close out the thread and start the process. My understanding from the manufacturer is that it will be about eight weeks once the order is made.
Questions or comments, I will do my best to answer.
Best,
