I have a hard time understanding that no one all these years knew that the NSU seals and RE5 seals were the same size and shape. People have been looking for this missing element for all these years and the answer is here? Jeff

We always knew, just didn't know where to find nos or remanufactured Ro80 seals. I tried contacting Hurley in the UK but never had any success. This contact is not generally advertised so hard to find- and what a find!

I am very pleased to hear this. Perhaps Mazda hop up shops out here will be willing to rebuild ours now. Parts changes things.

As Andy says I always new they were the same but Ro80 parts were even harder to find than RE5 parts. The other problem is many Ro80 sites are in German or Dutch so its quite hard to find these sources. I did source some new Ro80 apex seals when I did my second Ro80 rebuild but the guy was German, didn't speak English and wouldn't ship out of Germany so it took a bit of work to obtain them. Funnily enough he still has the seals on his website but it would take the same round about route to get more. Same goes for Hurley I tried and tried to deal with them but got nowhere. They don't seem to exist anymore or at least their website doesn't, but frankly given their lack of customer service Im surprised they lasted as long as they did. Still lets not dwell on the past these new seals look promising

Hello,
Indeed, there are not many Rotary guys who knew this....The reason is that you have to posses both a Ro80 and an RE5 and are building your own engines. I found out this way....The German guy Terry speaks off was indeed hard to contact. Should be even harder now since he passed away about a year ago. But I think his sons took over the business. I will mail them and ask for availability.
The Ro80 club could be the way to go. Dr. Fabritius is also an option. Maybe I can put something together if there is enough interest.
Another tip: broken side seals can be replaced in 4 ways:
1. Using the Original Ro80 side seals. Can be provided by the Ro80 club I think. 2. Using the Mazda 12B side seals. There are highter and longer but can be machined down to the right hight and length to fit. 3. Using the Mazda 12B side seals and make the nut in the rotor that holds them deeper. This is however a precision work. Due to the greater hight, the seals do not break as easelly and the engine has higher compression values. 4. Using the unbreakable (2 in 1 nut) side seals from Dr. Fabritius. Hurley had similar to offer.
When I got into the "ceramic" solution about 5 years ago, a good friend (and Ro80-enthousiast) of mine also made an inquiry in England to make up these seals. They where quite economical. I will ask my friend to inquire again.
Have a nice day,
Michel

All,
I just had contact with the Ro80-club's president. They have ceramic seals to offer that fitt our RE5's. They have tested them in a Ro80-engine for about 12000 kms and they work fine.
Normally they offer them only to their members but I asked Herr Meyer for a group-buy. To obtain a price, we need to establish how many interest there is in a set....
Please let me know,
Michel

I may be interested in two sets for RE5's. Or one set for a Ro80!

Hello Andy, noted!
I have some news: The Ro80-club gave me a quote of 450-460 € for a set (1 rotor). The set includes 3 ceramic topseals. I have also contacted a company that sells Ro80 parts. They can offer us a set of topseals in Ferrotic for 276 €.
As for now, interest is shown by:
- Andy (2 sets) - Terry (1 set) - Jess (1 set)
So, I total 2 Ro80-engine sets...:-)
Have a nice evening,
Michel

Hi Michel, thanks so much for posting up and contacting these people about the seals.
I would love a set of ceramic seals but I think that probably for my next build I'll get a set of ferrotic seals. Do you know if they can supply apex seal springs as well?
How would I organise to buy some ferrotic seals (1 set)- are you able to give me the details of the company or would I go through you?

Hello Andy, no problem, glad to have helped! I am sure the information I posted is very helpfull to keep our bikes on the road..... I am not sure the springs can be bought there. I am sure Dr. Fabritius has them for sale. Since there is not al lot of interest in the seals, a group-buy would not be very interesting. So I think everyone has to order the seals separately. The company that sells the Ferrotic apex seals has a website: www.nsu-ro80.de/ You can contact them directly thrue their website. I you want, I will be glad to translate your question to them in German: just send me a mail. Have a nice day, Michel

Hi Michel, If you want to email me pictures of the ceramic seals, I will post them to this thread so that everyone can see them. I have sent you a Personal Message with my email address.
I have also used one of your posts re the Ferrotic seals to make a "sticky" in the resources section with full credit to you. I'll probably do similar with an edited version of this full thread.
Thank you for all your help.

Michel has sent me the pictures of the seal sets that are available. I have reproduced his email on the subject below followed by the pictures. Best news we've had on engine rebuilds, thanks Michel. Hello Wayne, Thanks for helping out with the pictures! Included are three pictures: 1. the ceramic seals of Dr. Fabritius. I posted his email address in the other thread. Sadly the small triangular end pieces are not on the picture but they are included in the buy. They are still in metal. Note the dimensions, they have to be very accurate to have a good compression build up. 2. The ceramic seal of the Ro80-club. They took a different way: the two-piece solution. Works great. 3 Comparisation between RE5 seal and the Ro80 seal. Dimensions are the same, the even look the same....There is a small difference: the side pieces are a little different in width but this is compensated in the center piece so the overall length is the same. Thank you for the credit! We (my father and I) have been building Ro80-engines for about 25 years now. Not only our own but also for customers/friends. So we know a lot of the different solutions there are to replace the topseals. As I say people on the forum where struggling to get parts, I jumped in and offered my knowledge. That is what forum are there fore, no? Have a nice day, Michel Dr Fabritius ceramic seals (edge pieces not shown but included in the set) RO80 Club ceramic seal RE5 (top) RO80 (bottom)
