Hello,
In previous posts I discussed the replacement of the proper unit in my brother-in-law's early 1975 Re-5.
He's in from OH to pick it up this weekend.
Last Saturday I finished the bike up by changing the seals in the petcock.
The temperature was about 40 degrees Fahrenheit, 4.44 Celsius. When I started it up I heard a slight whirring sound, almost like the kickstart gear was slightly engaged. When it warmed up the sound was almost gone. Can't remember my Re-5 making that sound?
Wondering if it could be the oil pump? I must confess that I never took the pump apart. Is the oil pump pumping oil after it goes through the filter or before it goes into the filter? There were some metal shavings in the sump when I replaced the proper. Did some shavings get sucked into the pump and damage it?
Maybe I'm just overthinking this?
Regards,

I sometimes notice a slight whirring noise that seems to be from the points housing, may be the heal of the points on the cam, I lightly lubed the cam which seemed to help

When it warms up it's fine. Just started my re5 up, it does the same thing! I'm not going to worry about it.

This is very likely the bypass valve that's built into the oil filter. I use an aftermarket which also has the valve like the original Suzuki unit. In flutters rapidly on cold start ups and does sound like a whirring noise and like it's in the points area. Goes away once some heat's in the oil and less pressure to flutter the valve.
